Mafia III cambia de época histórica y da un salto en el tiempo. Nada más comenzar el juego, Hangar Games nos avisa de que seremos testigos de comportamientos racistas y xenofobos, dado que vamos a viajar a los años 60, visitando una ciudad ficticia conocida como New Bordeaux.
Lo cierto es que los parecidos con Nueva Orleans son más que evidentes. Se trata de una ciudad muy segregada, en una época en la que los afroamericanos no podían entrar en ciertos establecimientos ni tenían los mismos derechos que los blancos.
La trama sigue los pasos de Lincoln Clay, que regresa a New Bordeaux tras luchar en la guerra de Vietnam. No es fácil conseguir trabajo y cuando le ofrecen un gran golpe a la reserva federal no se lo piensa dos veces. A partir de ese momento los acontecimientos se desencadenan y arranca, algo tarde, la verdadera historia de Mafia III.
Gráficos:
Lo primero que nos llamará la atención en Mafia III es la expresividad y el realismo de cada uno de los rostros. Si los ojos son el espejo del alma, no cabe duda de que cada personaje (incluso los más secundarios) tienen la suya propia. Las animaciones son muy profesionales, aunque se echa en falta más variedad en las ejecuciones.
La recreación de New Bordeaux es impresionante. El juego ofrece unos efectos de luz increíbles, con puestas de sol y efectos como el deslumbrarnos al conducir.
Desafortunadamente hemos sufrido algunos errores (que nos han sacado del juego) y sido testigos de bugs gráficos o comportamiento extraño de la IA del juego.
Sonido:
Mafia III nos llega con voces y textos en castellano. Aunque la voz del protagonista nos parece demasiado grave, lo cierto es que el doblaje es impresionante. Es uno de los factores que más ayuda a la inmersión, con una ciudad viva a la que entendemos sin necesidad de leer subtítulos.
Por desgracia, los textos son diminutos y se hace difícil entender algunos. Hay muchos tutoriales (incluso aunque llevemos varias horas de juego) y es algo molesto.
Los efectos de sonido de Mafia III cumplen con su cometido, pero donde destaca el juego es un su banda sonora. Nos aguarda una colección de más de 100 temas de artistas como Etta James, The Beach Boys, James Brown, Elvis Presley, Paul Revere, Johnny Cash, The Rolling Stones, The Supremes, Jimi Hendrix o Marvin Gaye entre muchos otros. Es una verdadera delicia ponerse al volante y escuchar su banda sonora.
Controles:
Manejar a Lincoln Clay será sencillo, aunque cuesta un poco acostumbrarse a la elección de botones. Podemos correr, saltar, disparar o usar coberturas. Interactuamos con el entorno y hablamos con amigos o enemigos pulsando un botón. Según vayamos progresando, se desbloquearán nuevas opciones.
El menú radial nos ofrece la posibilidad de cambiar de arma, seleccionar granadas o cócteles molotov, llamar a un traficante de armas o pedir al conseglieri que recoja el dinero que llevamos encima y lo guarde en nuestra caja fuerte. Y es que si nos matan, perderemos casi todo lo que llevemos encima.
Las misiones pueden completarse de forma sigilosa o disparando primero y preguntando después. El control de los vehículos es bastante arcade aunque existe una modalidad de simulación mucho más realista.
Diversión y Duración:
Teníamos nuestras dudas con Mafia III por el salto temporal y el cambio de ciudad, pero lo cierto es que es un juego muy trabajado. La realidad es que Mafia III ofrece horas y horas de diversión.
Aunque la verdadera historia tarda lo suyo en arrancar, tiene gancho. Incluye saltos adelante y atrás en el tiempo, está bien contada y ofrece momentos muy espectaculares. Por otro lado, se echa en falta mayor variedad y es que todo se reduce a matar a unos y a otros.
La geografía de New Bordeaux (asentada en medio de un pantano) y su atmósfera mágica (con desfiles y fiestas) hacen que podamos recorrer el lugar en coche o en lancha y disfrutar del ambiente nocturno.
Al encarnar a un personaje de color, sentiremos en primera persona el rechazo de quienes nos rodean, ofreciendo un punto de vista inusual y descubriendo más sobre los acontecimientos que tuvieron lugar en ese periodo histórico.
No cabe duda de que el núcleo del juego está muy visto, y es que tenemos que conquistar uno a uno todos los territorios, pero su ambientación y las novedades que trae consigo salvan la situación.
Si robamos un coche puede haber testigos que llamen a la policía, si destruimos un negocio nada mejor que causar daños o robar dinero y mercancía. Si ponemos micrófonos en determinados puntos, escucharemos conversaciones muy interesantes y si secuestramos a un confidente, podemos conducir como locos para obligarle a cantar.
Son ese tipo de situaciones, nuevas en el género, las que confieren a Mafia III su personalidad. Es una pena que no se haya puesto más interes en mejorar las misiones y ofrecer más variedad.
Veredicto:
Mafia III es un juego notable. La historia de Lincoln Clay es atractiva y la ambientación de New Bordeaux está muy lograda. Nos encanta su doblaje al castellano e incluye una de las mejores bandas sonoras jamas oídas en un videojuego. Lo tiene todo para triunfar y es una apuesta segura.
Lo Mejor:

+ El diseño de los vehículos y la variedad de armas. Las novedades jugables.
+ El realismo de las animaciones y expresiones faciales.
+ Muchos extras y coleccionables.

– Sin viaje rápido, tenemos que conducir grandes distancias.
– Se vuelve repetitivo muy pronto.
– Se echa en falta mayor variedad en las misiones.
– Algunos errores del juego, bugs gráficos y problemas de la IA.
– Textos demasiado pequeños.
